Last Minute Spring Break Getaways
Weather got you down? If you are on the East Coast looks like the winter isn’t over yet – but there is still time to book at last minute getaway for Spring Break. We can all use a little time away and nothing like a fun family adventure to help hit the recharge button! Here are 5 off the beaten path suggestions that we think you might enjoy. Time to get packing...And don’t forget their pajamas!
- Florida Gulf Coast – The Florida Gulf Coast is often overlooked for the more popular Florida destinations (hello Disney and Miami), but there are some wonderful areas in the Gulf Coast that are perfect for a family getaway. From Sarasota (just south of Tampa) which is home to several gulf coast barrier islands and the winter home to the Ringling Brothers Circus to Fort Myers (where the Boston Red Sox head to for Spring Training), to Marco Island, there are plenty of fun family activities to keep everyone entertained.
- The Outer Banks, North Carolina – Known to locals a OBX, the Outer Bank has tons of activities for adventure junkies, history buffs and even nature enthusiasts. Climb the Bodie Island Light Station, take a tour of Island Farm a living history site, go fishing, explore the waters at the North Carolina Aquarium… the list of activities for you and your family goes on and on!
- The Grand Canyon, Arizona - The Grand Canyon may be one of the most visited tourist attractions in the U.S., but it’s also one of the best national parks to visit in spring because the notoriously crowded South Rim doesn’t get quite as many visitors during this time, and you will be avoiding the dangerous desert heat, temperatures don’t usually hit 90 degrees until late May. Last minute travelers may not be able to reserve a campsite, but definitely look into a mule ride to take you up and down as well as river rafting and tubing between the canyon walls, and the Grand Canyon Skywalk.
- Washington D.C - Washington DC is a perfect Spring Break destination for families, full of free (yes – all of our nation’s museums are free of charge) and interesting places to visit and kid-friendly activities. Early April usually coincides with DC’s famous cherry blossoms and the spring weather is ideal for outdoor walks through DC’s many memorials and gardens. No trip to DC is complete without a visit to The White House and The Air and Space Museum is always a family favorite. Any teens in the family? This is a perfect time to check off some colleges that may be on their lists, including Georgetown, American and Catholic Universities.
- Athens, Georgia – Athens has long been a destination for state residents, mostly because its home to the Georgia Bulldogs. But there are plenty of family friendly attractions to this college town including the Bear Hollow Zoo and the Sandy Creek Nature Center, with more than 4 miles of hiking trails and a 19th-century log cabin. The more adventurous family members may want to try skateboarding/BMX riding at the Skate Park of Athens. Or for a more leisurely day, you can stroll through the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, which features a 2.5-acre children's garden with interactive learning elements.
